Young Jeezy ft. Nas – My President is Black

So I’m more than a day late with this one, but I had to post Jeezy’s “My President is Black.”  The synth and rising horns capture the celebratory feeling of the moment, and Young put together a great hook: “My president is black my lambo’s blue/ and I’ll be goddamned if my rims ain’t too/ My mama ain’t at home and daddy’s still in jail/ I’m tryna make a plate, anybody seen the scale?”  His album, “The Recession” features a lot of songs with more expansive hooks (minus R. Kelly and Akon), suggesting that the Snowman has honed his pop sensibilities.  The lyrics are pretty typical fare for Jeezy, but Nas drops pretty heavy: “My president is black, yo Obama for real/They gotta put your face on the 5-thousand-dollar bill.”

The other highlight here is Jeezy announcing the feeling of victory he had long before the election: June 3rd, 2:08 am, win, lose, or draw.  Many people saw Lebron’s speech to the effect that “Nov. 4 is the most important day of our lives.”  This theme runs through a lot of recent rap, as we’ll explore in some later posts.
